A little background info on the origins of "I Wanna Be Your Man"...

Mick Jagger (Rock Star): "Of course, The Rutles were always well-known for their hit-making potential ability. And so, they ran round the corner to the pub to write this song, and came back with it and played it to us, and — erm — it was 'orrible, so we never bovvered to record it..."

The spoof isn't actually that far from the truth, here: apart, of course, from the fact that the song wasn't too 'orrible, and The Stones did record it, making a Top Twenty hit out of it — their first — just a couple of weeks before The Beatles' own release. Mainly written by Dirk McQuickly ("a real hustler for the songs"), built around its kicking lick, it was left to Ringo to provide the vocal.

Of course he doesn't camp it up as lasciviously as Mick had done (who could?!!) but he handles it well enough in his own inimitable style: "Like no other can". His overdubbed maracas do give a nice little nod to 'Nanker', though. Replacing Brian Jones' sexy slide with Harrison's throbbing tremolo also gives the tune a different kind of raunch to The Rollings: not to mention the insertion of George Martin's organ...

Ringo had to make do with a banana, however, for the lean, mean BBC version which they recorded for the Beeb the following spring.
