"Flying"

Categories: Beatles songs

What inspiring views were to be seen from the right-hand windows of the Mystery Tour bus!

In fact, the colourized Icelandic landscape shots for the "Flying" sequence were outtakes from Kubrick's Space Odyssey, though the BBC's original screening in black and white did them precious little justice.

The accompanying soundtrack is a suitably stoned twelve-bar instrumental jam, all wobbly guitars, mellotron and tape-loops, which nicely encapsulates the scenario — when viewed in lysergicolor, at least.

"It's credited to all four Beatles — which is how you would credit a non-song", observed Paul.

Provisionally titled "Aerial Tour Instrumental", all four of 'em also played around with it considerably before landing on the final take. The alternate version has gained cult-classic status, and the nine-minute extended mix has become urban myth.
